The Ishiuchi area has several great ski resorts that tend to be overlooked by the daytrippers so offer some superb skiing without the crowds. It has plenty of options for those looking for ski-in ski-out accommodation
The central town in this area, Shiozawa, recently underwent a facelift (timed to coincide with an NHK drama about a local historical personality) and completely redesigned the facade of the main street. It is now a recreation of an Edo period Japanese village and is definitely worth a visit. Kiyotsukyo Ravine is also nearby and is a must-see for anyone who enjoys stark, natural beauty.
