The Story of Minakami/Tanigawa

Back in the day Minakami was a peaceful, traditional onsen resort at the foot of the mountains. Close enough to Tokyo for the city dwellers to escape to, it was a popular weekend retreat. In recent times it has had a bit of an image overhaul and is now one of the main centers in Japan for adventure sports. Throughout the year there is always something for the intrepid to do, be it hurling yourself off a hilltop with a paraglider strapped to you, jumping off a bridge with nothing but a bungy cord around your ankles, or being washed over a waterfall on a canyoning tour. Many of the activities in Minakami take advantage of the geography of the area. Scenic in their own right, the mountains and rivers in the area provide many of the thrills. The Tone River is one of the best for rafting in Japan as the winter snow melt into it in Spring, and that same snow makes the area a wonderland for winter snow enthusiasts.

Minakami is a town in the heart of the region but it also refers to a broader area due to recent local government restructuring. There are things to do and places to stay in all different areas so it is worth checking on transport options if you do not have your own vehicle.

Our recommended access from Tokyo

Transportation Step1
Take Joetsu Shinkansen bullet train from Tokyo station to Jomokogen (please check the time table because some of the trains do not stop at Jomokogen Station). The price is 5,240JPY each way.

Transportation Step2
Change from the Bullet Train to a Local bus to 'Tanigawa Ropeway' from bus stop No.1 outside Jomokogen Station.
(Most hotels and ski resort offer a free pick up service from Minakami Station - if you need this service please ask us when you will make any booking through us. Minakami Station is located about 20 stops after Jomokogen). The price is 600JPY for Minakami station.
